Matt talks about the Ponca race :)

ah, you know... a little of this, a little of that. ponca was about as good as it gets as far as conditions go. wilhelm and jesse p. set the early pace in the expert race, with kent and schlake in tow. it sounds like schlake and kent got a good gap on jesse and tony, but it was the "cursed leader day." first it was schlake, who had a strange body mechanical (with a stabbing pain near his diaphram), and dropped out while leading. then it was kent's turn. i passed him on the pool climb on the last lap while he attempted to get his chain back into one piece. bummer for him...

personally, my race was pretty darn fun. my sparring partner for the afternoon ended up being greg shimonek, and he's fun to race with. we ended up passing eachother back-and-forth at least three, maybe four times. as is typical, he was climbing great, while i was descending a bit faster. he finally seemed to crack a bit on the run-up to the first climb on the third lap of the race. he stayed close though, as i had less than a minute on him at the finish. i've gotta' hand it to shim though. he helped pull me through a little physical and mental lull in the second lap, and i'm sure that i ended up going faster overall because of his encouragement on that lap. that's what i like so much about our "scene" around here. even though we race hard, we don't take it so seriously that we can't encourage eachother during the race. that didn't happen as much in my time in colorado (with some notable exceptions).
